"BNP Paribas" expects a heavy penalty in the U.S.

PARIS (Reuters) - The ongoing discussions between BNP Paribas and the U.S. authorities should lead "very soon" and result in severe penalties, says the CEO of the bank in a letter to employees obtained by Reuters Saturday.

"But this difficulty we are experiencing should not impact much for our roadmap," said Jean-Laurent Bonnafé in the letter sent Friday.

"Our discussions with the U.S. authorities should accelerate and lead very soon," he wrote. "I want to be clear: we will be punished heavily because malfunctions have occurred and that mistakes were made.".

BNP Paribas declined to comment on the report.

Several sources told Reuters that an agreement between the bank, which he is alleged to have circumvented the rules U.S. embargo for several years, and the judicial authorities and overseas regulatory could intervene early next week, one of them referring to an announcement on Monday.

In his letter, Jean-Laurent Bonnafé evokes no amount for this sanction. Sources familiar with the discussions told Reuters on Thursday that the bank hoped that its fine is seven to eight billion. The American press forward it, an amount of nine billion.

BNP Paribas had funded $ 1.1 billion in the fourth quarter of 2013 to the dispute but warned on April 30 that any fine would far exceed this amount.

Enforcement of U.S. authorities could undermine the ambitions of BNP in North America, a region known to contribute to the GNP group at 12% in 2016, against 10% in 2013.
